How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella is a facial injectable that reduces very small pockets of fat typically under the chin. It's a great solution for men and women who desire a strong jawline or a reduction of a double-chin. Kybella is made of a synthetic type of deoxycholic acid called ATX-101. Natural deoxycholic acid helps the body burn the fat that people get through their food. The synthetic ATX-101 in Kybella ruptures the fat cells and allows the contents to be released. When this happens, the body absorbs and expels the fat, the chin fat in this case, as it usually does.
Before A Session
It’s important for the potential client and the medical professional to have a consultation before Kybella treatment. This is to make sure that the double chin is not the result of a metabolic problem such as hyperthyroidism but is a simple accumulation of fat in a place the patient does not want it to be. It’s also a good idea for the potential patient to know that the dermatologist is skilled and experienced in Kybella chin injections. The medical professional must know where the muscles of the face are and how they work. They need to know how to inject the Kybella in a way that does not damage nerves or blood vessels and give the chin injections in a way that doesn’t damage the surrounding tissue.
The patient is advised about the cost of the procedure and shown before and after photos of patients who have already had Kybella. As Kybella is a cosmetic procedure, it is not covered under most health insurance plans. The patient can create a payment schedule with the doctor.
During the Procedure
During Kybella treatment, the dermatologist uses a fine needle to deliver about 12 to 20 injections into the patient’s chin fat per session. Each session lasts for 15 minutes or so. The patient is given an ice pack to soothe the injection sites, then allowed to go home or even back to work. The inevitable swelling and redness are mild, can be eased by ice packs or cool packs and go away after a few days.
A patient who has Kybella treatment often sees results right away, but the ideal is for them to come back for maintenance treatments scheduled about a month apart.
