Every day, your skin is exposed to sun and pollution which can take a toll on your skin. Age spots, fine lines, and even acne are all related to this exposure which we can’t control. We have to go outside and can’t avoid sun and pollution very easily.
Luckily, there are many great treatments that help your skin to be as healthy and young looking as possible. One of these is microdermabrasion. It’s one of the mildest, non-invasive procedures on the market today.
How does microdermabrasion work?
A small, handheld device sprays microcrystals of aluminum oxide on your face. These tiny crystals exfoliate, removing the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells on your face, revealing younger, healthier skin. The device also has a sucking mechanism on it that sucks the dried cells off the surface of your skin. This procedure is gentler on skin than dermabrasion, which can take off other layers of skin and can require a longer downtime.
What skin conditions are treated with microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is great for fine lines and wrinkles, light acne scarring, and discoloration.
It is NOT the right treatment for sagging skin or deep wrinkles. Active acne may benefit from microdermabrasion because it can clear clogged pores, but it can also aggravate acne as well. If you have acne, talk to your doctor before proceeding, or what until your acne has cleared.
Can microdermabrasion be used with other procedures?
Yes, it can be used in conjunction with other procedures. It is often used with chemical peels. Do the microdermabrasion first, followed by the peel.
If you have just had a peel, a wax, or have been tanning, wait about a month before having a microdermabrasion treatment.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion? How long does it take to see results?
Results can be seen immediately.
- Reveals healthier, younger skin
- Cleans pores
- Evens out skin tone, scaring, and pigmentation
- Increases collagen and elastin production
- Decreases appearance of fine lines and age spots
What are the side effects of microdermabrasion? Any downtime?
Microdermabrasion is great for sensitive skin with few side effects. The only side effects you should expect are pinkness and slight irritation. Many people get this procedure done at lunch and return back to work afterward. You can put makeup back on after the treatment to hide any redness. These effects will subside throughout the day.
How long do the effects last from a treatment?
It all depends on how well you care for your skin after a treatment but effects can last 6-12 months.
Does microdermabrasion remove facial hair like peach fuzz?
No, it doesn’t remove hair. If you want facial hair gone, try laser hair removal for hormonal hair growth (think lip and chin) or do a microplaning treatment to get rid of peach fuzz.
Do you suggest multiple treatments?
Yes, definitely. Treatments over time can help you to have thicker, healthier skin layers. Treatments should be placed 2-3 weeks apart. Multiple appointments give you the greatest benefits. We can evaluate your skin and design a custom treatment plan just for you.
